Oceanside California Real Estate

Oceanside is just north of Carlsbad – and is, in fact, the first city you come to driving south on I-5 into San Diego County. Originally home to the American Indian group known as the Luiseño people, settlement as we understand it began in 1798 with the founding of the historic Mission San Luis Rey de Francia some four miles up river from the coast along the San Luis Rey River.

Oceanside California Real Estate In 1834, all the Mission properties were confiscated by the governor of California, Pio Pico, and sold for $2,437.50. During this period, the Mission buildings fell into disrepair. Father Joseph Jeremiah 0'Keefe in 1893, arrived to restore the Mission. When he retired in 1912, much a the major restoration had been accomplished, but work continues today. The Mission is an active one, serving the Oceanside community year ‘round. Much of Oceanside's original development took place around the Mission, a trend which continues today.

In 1881, the rail road came to the area and was routed along the coast. Development began to grow around the rail road station which is now the center of Oceanside 's commercial district.

By 1887, the Bank of Oceanside was built on the comer of Second (today's Mission Avenue) and Hill Streets and also a grand hotel, the South Pacific, located on Third and Pacific Streets.

Oceanside was incorporated on July 3, 1888 with a population of around a thousand people.

Oceanside Real Estate The first pier was built in 1888; it was destroyed in the winter of 1899-01. Melchoir Pieper, the proprietor of the South Pacific Hotel, salvaged most of the lumber and in 1893 the pier was rebuilt in its present location.

Like so much of southern California, real estate in Oceanside has always been important. The railroad brought both new residents and tourists until 1920, when a paved highway between Los Angles and Oceanside was completed. Gradually, people began to drive to Oceanside, although you can still use the train to travel to and from Los Angeles today.

In 1942, the vast Santa Margarita y Los Flores was purchased to create the largest U.S. Marine Corps base in the world. The development of the base created a boom that continued through much of the 1950s. By 1953, Oceanside had a population of about 20,000. Growth has continued, making Oceanside an ideal place for real estate investment.
