Leucadia California Real Estate

South of Carlsbad, along the historic highway 101, you'll find Leucadia. The town named after a Greek Island and means "Isle of Paradise" or "Place of Shelter." The area along the rail road was settled in 1870 by a group of Spiritualists from England. They subdivided their land into 5-acre plots. Today you'll sill see the street names of a myriad of Greek Gods west of I-5.

Leucadia California Real EstateLeucadia is considered by many to be a community of the city of Encinitas which is immediately to the south. Known for its towering eucalyptus trees, the commercial area also has the original and charming Encinitas train station. It was designed by Fred F. Perris who build an identical one in Carlsbad. In 1975, the station was set to be demolished. Instead, it was rescued by Jim Bowen of Cardiff who moved it to Leucadia and restored it with architect John Henderson's help. Today it is home to the Panniken coffee shop and classified as one of the most important historical rail road structures in all of San Diego County.

The ambience of Leucadia might be called “beach casual.” There are several outstanding surf spots hidden at the base of the beach bluffs and along old Highway 101 you'll find charming antique shops, interesting motels, and a good variety of ethnic eating establishments.

Originally home of hundreds of acres of avocado groves and known for flower growing and plant nurseries, the area continues its agricultural heritage right along with gentle development. Many of the streets have no curbs or sidewalks, adding to the feel of a small town close to San Diego.

But Leucadia has more to offer than the beach, as wonderful as that is. As you move eastward, the area lies against the Batiguitos Lagoon which is now an ecological reserve. Batiquitos is a tidal lagoon and there are walking trails which can bring you close to many shorebirds, particularly at high tide.

Leucadia Real EstateA bit further east and you'll find the famed La Costa Resort and Spa which has a world renowned spa, two world class golf courses (and home to World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship), tennis and more.

It's sometimes hard to tell where Leucadia real estate ends and Encinitas and Carlsbad real estate begins. Along the bluffs you'll find lovely condominiums with views of the Pacific that go on roughly forever. Tucked along historic Highway 101, there are restored cottages and spectacular estates, some with ocean views.

As you move east, you'll find homes that date back to the early 1900s next to modern custom homes, often on surprisingly large lots. Moving a bit further east you'll find a wide range of modern homes in well planned developments.

There are still large lots and small parcels of land available for you to build your own custom dream home.

Real estate investment in the Leucadia area includes residential units, and some commercial properties.
