La Jolla California Real EstateLa Jolla, pronounced la-hoya, is also known as the jewel of San Diego County's coast. It's been a tourist destination since the 1880s. In 1887, the San Diego Union said "Say the French, 'See Paris and die! Make your home at La Jolla and Live, say I."
In 1906 a bath house was constructed above the cove, providing facilities for many visitors. The still famous La Valencia Hotel was started in 1927, first as an apartment house, with the hotel added the following year. By the 1930s it had become a destination for royalty and movie stars alike. In 1928, accomplished potter Cornelio Rodriguez, came to La Jolla, looking for a suitable site where he and his brothers, Abraham and Ubaldo, could start a pottery works. At the bend of what was then called La Jolla Canyon Road, the main route to Los Angeles, he found potter's gold, the perfect clay deposit, otherwise known as "barro." This began the growth of the arts in La Jolla and a sort of artists colony grew up around the pottery. The pottery continued in business until the 1980s. At the beginning of World War II, the Army leased some 750 acres in the Torrey Pines area along the bluffs above and just north of La Jolla. The camp closed in 1945 and in 1953 legendary golf course architect William F. Bell, Sr. envisioned a championship golf course on the site. Today the course is known world around. Nearby, the Scripps Institution of Marine Biology was founded in 1909. In 1912, about a quarter section of land and improvements were deeded to the Regents of the University. By 1925, the scope of the activity had broadened and the name was changed to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
