Del Mar California Real Estate

Del Mar is a delightful community located north of La Jolla a few miles. Downtown Del Mar is along the coastal bluffs. Close by is the site of the San Diego County fair which actually got its start in 1880 as an agricultural Fair to bring county farmers together to share ideas, see who had the best citrus fruit, who baked the best pie, and who had the fastest horse. Horse racing quickly became an important draw and was made legal in 1933.

Del Mar California Real EstateThe rail road came to Del Mar in 1882, making the seaside resort accessible to the public. Railroad worker Theodore Loop, loved the area, calling it "the most attractive place on the entire coast."   He and his wife, Ella, built a tent city right on the beach, which Ella called Del Mar after a popular poem titled, "The Fight on Paseo Del Mar." It wasn't long before a real estate boom began. The same year Colonel Jacob Taylor also discovered Del Mar. He decided to take advantage of the land boom and bought 338.11 acres of land for $1,000. He built a resort he expected to become a destination, and although it thrived briefly, his dream was lost to bankruptcy, flood, and fire by 1890.

In 1910, the South Coast Land Company built a new hotel called the Stratford Inn. This resort did become a magnet for the rich and famous, including many Hollywood stars. Electricity arrived in the 1920s, securing Del Mar's place as the place to be.

Today you'll find the Del Mar library in a charming craftsman style building that was built in 1914 as a Catholic Church, and there are also restored homes that date back almost that far.

Del Mar is known for its 2-1/2 mile sandy beach (where sometimes you'll see race horses being worked out), charming homes and a culture based in the arts. To the south is famed Torrey Pines Park and more miles of sandy beaches.

Although the city of Del Mar is small and restricted to the coast, its influence extends east along gently rolling hills above the San Dieguito River. It's proximity to the University of California at La Jolla and the city of San Diego give you all the advantages you could want. Schools are excellent. Del Mar is perfect for families and singles alike.

Real estate in Del Mar and the Del Mar area offers a wide and exciting variety. Close to town you'll find restored cottages, larger homes over looking the ocean on good sized lots and a selection of condominiums. As you begin to move east, you'll find custom homes on large lots overlooking the sea. Close by are modern homes in well planned developments with all the amenities.

There are exquisite million dollar properties that are true estates, both with white water views and with views of the back country. And you can still find land in the Del Mar area, perfect for the custom home of your dreams.

We'd be delighted to introduce you to Del Mar. Call us today.
