Originally settled by the American Indian group known as the Luiseño people, much of the greater Carlsbad area was part of the 13,311 acre land grant, Rancho Agua Hedionda which was granted to Don Juan María Marrón in 1842.

Carlsbad California Real EstateThe California Southern Railroad arrived in the 1880s when former ship captain John Fraizer dug a fresh water well and provided water for the steam driven locomotives. Fraizer dug a second well and this one produced mineral water that, when analyzed was found to have the same mineral content as one Europe's most popular health spas called Karlsbad, Bohemia. As a result, a small mineral water bottling works and the 100-room Mineral Springs Hotel was built. Today, that mineral well is still in front of Alt Karlsbad Hanse House, a three-story, half-timbered turreted home close to down town. There is a museum of memorabilia and art galleries are in the basement.

For a time, the small town was known as ‘Carl' so it wouldn't be confused with Carlsbad, New Mexico on train schedules. Following World War I, residents went back to the original name, this time spelled with a ‘C.'
